Levi's® Vintage Clothing 1944 501 Jeans WWII Rigid Indigo

Everything changed during World War II - from American industry and media to the jeans people wore every day. To conserve raw materials for the war effort, the U.S. government required clothing manufacturers to reduce the use of metal, fabric, and thread in their garments. As a result, details such as watch pocket rivets, the crotch rivet, and the back cinch were removed, while standard-issue laurel leaf buttons took their place.

One wartime restriction proved especially difficult for Levi’s®: the removal of the iconic arcuate stitching on the back pockets - a signature detail that distinguished Levi’s® jeans from all others. Rather than abandon it completely, Levi’s® began hand-painting the arcuate design onto every pair of 501® jeans leaving the factory. Although the paint eventually faded with wear and washing, the unmistakable identity of the jean remained visible at the time of purchase. Limited to 694 pairs!
